The Culture Wars: Part Oh My Fucking G-d this is Absurd...

In the WSJ, Thomas "What's the Matter with Kansas" Frank discusses the hypocrisy in Palin's culture war argument. The reverse elitism drives me mad. Frank writes:
But what really defines them in Mrs. Palin's telling is their enemies, the people who supposedly "look down" on them. The opposite of the heartland is the loathsome array of snobs and fakers, "reporters and commentators," lobbyists and others who make up "the Washington elite."

Frank presents his economy versus culture argument, again. Will people finally value the economy over the culture?

How soon is now?

The elitism argument is weird on so many levels. Not the weirdest of which is, the people who want to criminalize behavior they deem "unacceptable" are the populists, and the live and let live people are the elitists. Go figure.

Bill Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid" did him worlds of good back in 1992, effectively taking the culture war off the table. Obama's task is similar, but arguably harder, since the GOP has now had 16 extra years of practice, ramping up tribal loyalties and moral prejudices.
