Paging Mitt Romney, Paging Mitt Romney

The Republican National Committee may want to speak to you before the Convention in Minnesota.

It seems John McCain has many problems. First, can he be President since he was born in the Panama Canal Zone and, hence, not a "Natural Born Citizen?" I am sure the strict constructionists he wishes to appoint would need to rule against him.

Second, if we can settle the constitutional issue, McCain has some financial issues over campaign financing. It appears as if he accepted a loan for his campaign, which means he may need to use public funds for both the Primary and the General Election. Consequently, he may not be able to spend a dime until the general election begins after the conventions. The New Republic has more on his problems.

Also, a TNR Bonus: Why the NY Times chose to endorse Senator Clinton over Senator Obama. Man does TNR have it out for the Times.

Solon, on a related note: What do you think about the Obama situation re campaign finance?

Can he get away with rejecting public financing in the GE? He's raking in all this dough from increasingly involved citizens, but the press is going to hound him over this, more and more.

Harrogate thought Obama's "we'll settle it to everyone's satisfaction if the moment comes" answer, in the last debate, was fine on a practical level, it's understandable he wants to buy (pun intended) himself a little time. Even if it did smell a bit like a dodge.

What, ultimately, will he do?

This Rhetorical Situation, btw, makes Harrogate mad, for reasons thematically similar to why Harrogate is still pissed about the way things have gone down in Michigan and Florida. Cannot the Democrats get Anything right, Anything At All, when it comes to running for President?

For the first time, the likely Dem candidate is better financed than the Rep will be, and it looks like it will have to be squandered because of a promissory note.

Freakin' Great.

Article II, Section 1 reads: "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

The person refers to the presidential candidate and not the parents of said candidate.

The natural born citizen does not refer to a medical practice but to the geographical area in which the person was born-- inside the U.S. Now, you can argue that a territory is part of the US and that the Canal Zone was part of the US Territory, but you cannot argue about the parents of the person.

Finally, you could argue, because of the grammar of the constitution, that all Presidents after Zachary Taylor were unconstitutional, but that would have no bearing on the argument here.

Um, call me Pollyanna here, but the second part of the statement says, "a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution." So based on McCain's birth date, he shouldn't be a problem either way.
