Take 'em off

The old news: McCain and Obama both missed the deadline to be put on the Texas ballot. The secretary of the state has, nevertheless, decided to let them on. The only candidate who filed his paperwork on time is libertarian Bob Barr.

The new news: Barr is suing the office of the secretary of the state to have McCain and Obama taken off the Texas ballot.

I'm with Barr on this.

Hmmm. Harrogate would rather be with Busey.

But on a more serious note. Too much worship of bad rules and laws. Don't we all appreciate the beat cop who knows the guys in Apartment C are sitting on Pete's Couch but who realizes that pursuing it amounts to a waste of resources and an abrogation of decency. Yes. We do.

It is bad law, the timeline is too early. They need to change the rule. Now.

Others will disagree. Others will say we depend on the Rule of Law. And they are right too. Harrogate's got too much of an anarchist's streak in himself, for his own taste.

But he will say this. In the name of pragmatics. Which is to say, for those unconcerend with the principle of the thing. Liberals salivating at the thought of Barr getting his way here, had better be careful. Because it would be quite arguably justifiable for the Florida and Michigan Legislatures to respond by decertifying Obama, leaving only McCain, Barr, and Nader on those tickets.

From a pragmatic standpoint, I think it would be great if McCain got kicked off the ballot in Texas.

It would be impossible for him to win the presidency.

Besides, it could lead to the end of the electroal college.

I hope that Barr is successful.

But if McCain gets taken off, shouldn't Obama, who missed the same deadline, also be taken off? That sort of messes up your plan, doesn't it, Solon?

M: Solon is pointing out that is both Obama and McCain came off, Barr would stand a good chance of winning Texas. Unless write-ins are going to be allowed, there is really no way Barr wouldn't win.

Which would take those electoral votes off the table for McCain. Which would, theoretically, throw the election to Obama.

A great result. But again. Harrogat, on this one, is not with Barr. He is with Busey.

If Texas lets McCain and Obama stay on the ballot, then they need to put Nader on there, too.

If you're not gonna enforce the rules for the two big parties, then you shouldn't enforce the silly rules that keep most third-party candidates off.

Harrogate agrees with ye 100% regarding Nader. But unlike the other two latecomers, Nader operates under a strict media blackout.

This blog is one of the only non-Nader Sites that even bothers to talk about him at all.

That's because we're mavericks.
