If I Can Dream

Following Solon's lead, here is another post that brings together MLK, Memphis, and the Civil Rights Movement. This is Elvis singing one of his most beautiful songs, "If I Can Dream." What you hear here is the second take of the song. A guitar error made Elvis have to redo his first take. Elvis was so moved during the recording of this song, so it is said, that he vowed never again to sing a song that he didn't believe in. The montage on this video makes explicit the song's allusion to MLK (and to others to whom an allusion is less pronounced).

This is an excellent song. Thanks for posting it.

I think that there are four images that stand out.

First, the juxtaposition of the civil rights shots with the 1970s Elvis in the white suit around 1:38 minutes in. Here is the movement and here is the king. And, they seem odd?

Second, Mt Rushmore?

Third, Hawaiian Elvis?

Fourth, and most importantly, the picture with the activist sticking the flower in the barrel of a soldier's gun at the Pentagon. I think that this was the moment when the country was just about to fall apart. If there were a violent confrontation there we would not have a country now.

Yes, there are some interesting photo choices here. I would have put together a different montage. None of the Elvis pics would have been there.
