Holy &$#@!!!!!: "McCain Suspends Campaign To Help With Bailout"

Linky link.

Here's an Interesting Snippet:
He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

Here's another:
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

And one more:
McCain has fallen in recent polls as a result of the economic crisis. The latest FOX News/Opinion Dynamics poll shows Obama has taken a 45-39 percent lead over McCain, in large part because of independent voters. A Washington Post poll also showed that most voters think Obama has a better approach to dealing with the economy than McCain.

Okay. Like most Americans, Harrogate doesn't pretend to know what to do about this economic shitstorm. Most people would prefer no Bailout, it seems. But most people would prefer a Bailout to a full-scale Depression. So, most of us don't know what to think. The issue of CEO Compensation will not go away though, and neither will the Issue of Accountability in terms of how this money is spent, if we pony it up. That much these politicos need to remember, and remember well.

But meanwhile, Harrogate humbly makes the following assertion: There is No Way in Hell Obama should Agree to a Formal "Postponement" of this Campaign. There are so many fallacies built into what McCain is asking Obama to do, and what he is asking the Debate Commission to do, Harrogate doesn't even know where to begin. If Obama agrees to this Harrogate will be a Sad Panda.

But, Here let Harrogate add what he WOULD be supportive of. Let the Presidential Debate Commission switch the order of the topics. So that the economy is Friday's subject. Yes, we're all riled up about Im-A-Dinner-Jacket's visit to the UN. And we're worried about what is taking place in North Korea. And the two Wars we are in are really, really big deals. But the Rhetorical Situation we are in nevertheless dictates that the economy is what people are going to want to hear these candidates talk about, on this coming Friday night.

Hmmm. We'll see what they do.

CNN reports that Obama called McCain at 8:00 A.M. and discussed coming together and issuing a joint statement. Apparently, McCain agreed. But then decided to issue his own statement.

Obama has said that he won't suspend his campaign and still wishes to debate on Friday.

The trap for Obama is that he must refuse McCain in a way that McCain cannot say, "See, Obama is not putting country first and just wants to win an election. Obama wants to politicize the economy."

Obama's stance must be that this is not time for silence on the issue; it is time for confidence by our leaders.

Oxy:

More honor from McCain.

And, good news re Obama.

If you suspend the campaign, why not suspend the election?

I just read the link. It mentions the call. Duh!

Obama's about to make his statement...

Can McCain walk and chew gum at the same time?

Oxymoron said...

True, Solon.

Why aren't you a political advisor?

And, solon gets it exactly right.

The wonder and beauty of this financial crisis is that we finally have an enormous issue on which Public DOES NOT WANT TO BE PANDERED TO. Because we don't have fixed positions, or even full understanding of the Issue at stake, we are hard to pander to. Sure, we'll enjoy a little pandering as far as CEO Golden Parachutes. But that's about it.

Solon nailed it, what we want and need is leadership.

If the deadline for the vote is Friday, then who cares about debating Friday night?

Are they incapable of voting in the afternoon and debating in the evening?

The Wall Street melt down is beyond serious. Calling for silence at a time like this is almost as absurd is picking Sarah Palin for VP. Wait, Damn it.

Neal Boortz says this suspension will not bode well for McCain.

People already don't think he knows enough about the economy, and now in the middle of a real crisis, he wants to put off the debate. It just reinforces the perception that he doesn't understand.

Correction: "It reinforces the fact that he doesn't understand."

It's not just a perception.

McCain and the downward spiral are becoming interchangeable concepts at this point. Hopefully that will continue.

But a question remains. How WILL Obama do on Friday, if they make the debate about the economy. Already skeptical of McCain on this issue, what does the electorate need to hear, that will create confidence in Obama?

The plot thickens.

There is a growing threat with Russia, instability in Iraq.

Cancel the debate. The elections. The Three-Ring Circus.

Run. Hide. Run.

Protect the clowns. The women and children.

Shoot the moose!!!

What me pull a rabbit from my hat? Again Bullwinkle?

It seems to Harrogate that Obama's basic calmness will help dampen some of the scare tactics ye are speaking of, Solon.

His unflappability and flexibiliy of mind are arguably his two greatest political strengths. If he can convince people that he also has a salient vision of what we need to do here, he might well win the election this week.

Another point:

McCain wants to postpone the debate to go and pass legislation.

We have no idea about the consequences of our financial bailout. But McCain, he knows (like Paulson), and wants to act immediately...

Is &700 billion required at this moment? Will $150 suffice until the new year? Let's have a "debate" before we invade Iraq, er, Iran, er bailout Wall Street. Maybe this debate should be on Thursday night before the Friday deadline. Maybe the potential leaders of the respective parties, Senator Obama and Senator McCain should lead this debate.

That is leadership...
