When Metaphors Crystallize: A Real 'Media Drive-By', of Sorts

Still, as Harrogate and Supadiscomama discussed last night, the best Metaphor in our Vernacular remains that of Shit Hitting the Fan. It means exactly what it evokes, so sublimely, so humorously, so viscerally.

But the 'Drive-By Media' meme, begun by Rush Limbaugh, is also relatively useful at times. This morning we had a convergence between Reality and Metaphor, as Valerie Plame's verbal assassin, Robert Novak, apparently slammed his car into a bicyclist and attempted to leave the scene of the crime.

Linky.

He said he chased Novak half a block down K Street., finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block it and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blared and commuters finally went into reverse to allow Novak to pull over.

Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.” He said he vaguely recognized the longtime political reporter and columnist as a Washington celebrity but could not precisely place him.

Finally, Bono said, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He quoted Novak as responding: “I didn’t see him there.”

Heh. Down K Street, indeed.

What a coincidence... Mr. P-duck and I were also discussing this saying. Mr. P-Duck mentioned that things were coming to a head at work with some slack employees. I advised Mr. P-duck to "duck when the shit hits the fan." He laughed and responded that he didn't think it was a saying I would use. I think it's a fantastic saying - especially the part about ducking.

But isn't the futility of Ducking an essential component of the Transcendent problem posed, when Shit Hits The Fan?

However could one hope to prevail by ducking, when the shit is being thrown hither, thither, and yon. To an fro, up and down. And all this, moreover, with instantaneous speed.

Perhaps the only hope is to take some sort of cover. Even then, 'twould be dicey!!!

I think one's best bet is to run!

Let it be understood that Jon Stewart, clearly after reading this blog, made Novak's yesterday morning "mishap" a centerpiece of his program.

Stewart followed Harrogate's lead in abstracting from the accident, broader connections to the nature of Novak's soul. But his commentary wasn't as poignant, nor as funny, as Harrogate's herein.

Watch the re-run tonight if ye don't believe.

My favorite quotes from the article:

"He's not dead, that's the main thing."

That really *is* the main thing. That and the fact that you hit a person with your car and didn't stop.

“’Learn to read the signs, [bodily orifice]!’ Novak snapped before speeding away,” according to an item in The Washington Post’s Reliable Source column.

Hmmm...bodily orifice? One wonders which one: "Learn to read the signs, Vagina!" or maybe "Learn to read the signs, ear canal!

Do you remember that moment from Airplane when Striker says, "When Kramer hears this, the shit's gonna hit the fan"? Then, of course, when Kramer hears the news, the shit literally hits the fan. A wonderful cinematic moment.
