For Supadiscomama, from her BFF Gwen
Gwen got in touch with me this morning, and she asked me to post this for her BFF Supadiscomama. Oh, and she'd like to arrange a playdate between Kingston and Supa-T.
She's so rad. I just googled the song, b/c I don't know what a "hollaback girl" is. Apparently, Courtney Love disparagingly called Gwen a cheerleader, so Gwen's "fuck you" response is this song. Gwen's already about a thousand steps ahead of Courtney Love in so many ways--but how awesome that she told her to fuck off in song (while looking super cool and hot all the while)!
Interesting! When I team-taught with my advisor, she mentioned loving this song, but also said she didn't know wht a "hollaback girl" was. Our students explained that it is a girl who doesn't "hollaback," who tries to keep above the fray. For example, when a guy cat calls said girl, rather than "hollaback" she simply ignores him. In the ignoring there is power, I think. I didn't know the Courtney Love story, but it does add to my students' explanation.
