Um, Why do we all of a sudden care about this woman?

I'm beginning with yet another disclaimer: I'm linking to an article that I purposely haven't read and that, no matter what the comments, I will not be reading. I hope the following explains why.

I lived in NY State when Eliot Spitzer served as Attorney General. I know the good he did in terms of cleaning up corporate abuses, so I was saddened to hear that he let his power run away with him and was involved with prostitution. I was even more saddened to hear that his personal stupidity cost NY State a reasonably good governor. For various reasons I haven't been able to read as much on this story as I would like, so I will likely be expanding my comments on Spitzer's stupidity later.

I do have one question though: why do we all of a sudden care about one of the women he allegedly hired? I was infuriated to go to MSNBC's website this evening and read this headline: "Her name is . . ." This is part of what is wrong with our society and our extreme fascination with all things remotely associated with celebrity. This young woman (and remember I don't know anything about her because I didn't read the article and I won't be reading the article) is using the misfortune of the Spitzer family and the people of NY State to get her 15 minutes in. Perhaps she thinks it will get her that music contract she apparently wants, since the subheading announces that she is an "aspiring musician."

As a side issue, I'd personally like to thank Andy Warhol for predicting (and I would argue ensuring) the celebrity nature of our culture.

I'll admit it. I clinked on the link, before I saw her photo 9,000 times on Morning Joe.

I, like others, wanted to know what a $4300/ hour girl looks like. What makes this person so different than than rest of us. I also want to know what one receives for $4300, especially when the documents raise safety concerns.

But, some of the curiosity rests with how the other half live. Most people do not earn $5000 a month let alone have $5000 to throw away on a sexual tryst or $80,000 to throw away over the course of 6 years.

Most people realize that there are double standards in life and the difference rests with money.

But, I do not know if she desired this fifteen minutes and the court dates that comes along with this. It is not as if people will think of her in a positive light as she will just be a prostitute. It is unlikely she will be a musician.

I wonder how she got to this point.

I'm not so sure I agree with you, Solon. Lots of women have parlayed careers as Playboy Playmates and careers in the porn industry into careers in the entertainment industry--consider Pamela Anderson, Traci Lords, and Jenna Jameson. If she gets the right agent and the right publicist, she'll get some boost to her career out of this. She may not become the musician she claims to want to be, but I bet that at the very least she gets an offer to pose in Playboy or Penthouse, which can pay fairly well.

Judging from the photo, I wouldn't have gone a dollar over $3850.

Sure, she might end up in a nudey magazine for those men who don't have the spare $4300. But, I agree with Solon -- beyond the possible photo shoot, her future is not all that bright.

Consider other "political other women" -- extramarital lovers unpaid Lewinsky, Donna Rice, Gennifer Flowers and paid Rosemary Garcia (Jimmy Swaggart), Divine Brown, and lest I be accused of sexism Mike Jones (Ted Haggard). These people may be "famous" but not in a good way and not celebrity and in fact most of them have drifted into obscurity.

The closest to a celebrity is Jessica Hahn, which is the most disturbing case. Her "career" includes multiple Playboy appearances, appearance in a Sam Kinison video (whom she also dated) and a frequent guest and call-in contributor to The Howard Stern show -- so her career is always linked with sex and remember of all the women I have listed she was the only non-willing participant.

I agree that we shouldn't care who she is but I certainly don't think she is going to parley this into celebrity status.

Name recognition? Probably.

"career." Southpaw, nice use of the tried and true quotation marks.

BTW, Harrogate tried to call ye this evening. Second half almost over. Sigh. A&M's offense is simply putrid.

Putrid.

Putrid.

Hi, Jack.
